THE DIGEST
đąWater Main Fixed on Deer Street. After two days without water, 35 Banff homes saw service restored as of 5 PM yesterday. Crews battled frigid temps to fix the break on Deer Street. The town provided bottled water and free showers at Fenlands Rec Centre.
đ¨Teen Skier Crashes at Lake Louise. A teenage skier was flown to Calgary in serious condition after an "uncontrolled landing" in the Lake Louise terrain park on Jan. 26. Ski patrol responded first before STARS air ambulance transported him.
đBanff Logs Second Driest January in 136 Years. With only 2.3 mm of precipitation, Banff just recorded its second driest January since 1889. Snowpack levels across the Rockies are also below normal, continuing last yearâs dry trend.
â ď¸No Precip = Rough Trails. Cross-country skiers in Banff are facing tough conditions, with many trails either ungroomed or in poor shape due to thin snow cover. Affected trails include Tunnel Mountain, Spray River East, and Sundance. Some sections remain skiable, but unless you're into rock dodging, best to wait and avoid.
đŤSkiing Sucks, But The Stargazing Is Awesome. Alberta stargazers can catch a rare planetary parade this month, with all visible planets lining up in the night sky. The best views are in the evening, with Jupiter, Mars, and Venus shining brightest. Mercury joins the show in mid-Februaryâhereâs when to look up.
BRINGING STONEY NAKODA STORIES TO THE SCREEN

Whatâs Happening? Stories We Have Earned explores Stoney Nakodaâs deep but often overlooked history in film and entertainment. Directed by Stoney Nakoda filmmaker Cody Lefthand and produced by Calgaryâs Gary Burns, the documentary shares firsthand stories from Elders in the Stoney language.
A Star-Studded Yet Complex Legacy. The Stoney Nakoda have been involved in film since the silent era, appearing in productions featuring Marilyn Monroe and Dustin Hoffman. While these experiences created opportunities, the film also highlights the exploitation Indigenous performers faced.
Beyond Entertainment. Events like Banff Indian Days and the Calgary Stampede allowed Stoney Nakoda families to reunite but often forced them to perform for tourists rather than share their culture authentically. Today, thatâs changingâElbow River Camp now focuses on education, not spectacle.
Where to Watch? Following festival screenings, Stories We Have Earned hits Calgaryâs Globe Theatre from Feb. 27âMarch 2, with more screenings in the works.

SPORTS
Hockey. Toronto Maple Leafsâ William Nylander and Max Domi swapped the ice for some R&R in the Rockies, spotted unwinding at an Alberta Nordic spa. The steam room must have helped their game, as the Leafs won 6-3 over the Flames last night in Calgary.
More Hockey. The Canmore Eagles are back at Fenlands Arena on Feb. 11 for their second Banff game of the season. Their last visit packed in 800+ fans. We wonder whether or not we could get that number to 1000 if the Canmore Eagles let Bow Valley Insider be their official Media Partnerâguess weâll never knowđ).
Thatâs all, folks!
