Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Canmore

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Canmore, Exshaw, and Ghost Lake, warning that storms Tuesday evening could produce strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Environment Canada said conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms, with storms expected to continue into the evening.

Some of those thunderstorms may become severe.

“Driving conditions may be difficult,” the weather agency said, advising people to be prepared for severe weather.

The watch carries a yellow alert designation, with a moderate impact level and high forecast confidence. Under Environment Canada’s alert system, yellow means hazardous weather may cause damage, disruption or health impacts, with impacts expected to be moderate, localized or short-term.

Environment Canada advises people to head indoors when thunder is heard. If threatening weather approaches, people should take cover in a basement or interior room. Anyone caught outside should protect themselves from flying debris and hail.

Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring Environment Canada alerts and forecasts as conditions develop Tuesday night.

Canmore also remains under an air quality warning because of wildfire smoke. Environment Canada said smoke is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility at times, but is expected to clear from Banff, Canmore and Kananaskis early Wednesday morning. Until conditions improve, the agency recommends limiting time outdoors and considering reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.
