Quick Response Knocks Down Canmore Wildfire Near Wastewater Plant

A small wildland fire in Canmore was quickly brought under control Wednesday after multiple river users spotted the blaze, prompting a rapid response that included ground crews and six helicopter loads of water.

The fire near Canmore’s wastewater treatment plant was reported to Canmore Fire-Rescue at 3:13 p.m. on July 22 by several river users who alerted emergency responders, according to the Town of Canmore.

Fire crews initially accessed the site on foot because the fire was burning in a forested area. Alpine Helicopters supported crews from the air, dropping six loads of water on the fire, while Alberta Wildfire provided additional air and ground support.

According to a statement from the Town, the burned area measured approximately two metres by 10 metres and was brought under control shortly after crews began suppression efforts.

Despite its proximity to the wastewater treatment plant and powerlines, the Town said there was no risk to critical infrastructure.

The fire occurred on provincial land within Canmore’s municipal boundary and was eventually turned over to Alberta Wildfire. Its cause remains under investigation.

Wildfire danger remains very high in Canmore and the Calgary Forest Area, with hot, dry and windy conditions drying vegetation and increasing the potential for fires to ignite and spread quickly. Canmore remains under a fire advisory, with residents and visitors urged to use caution as wildfire danger remains elevated.

“While hard work and fast responses made today successful, this incident is an important reminder that wildfire is Canmore’s top-rated risk,” the Town said in a statement Wednesday.

The Town also stressed the importance of immediately reporting wildfires, noting that quick reporting gives firefighters the best opportunity to control a fire before it grows.

“If you see a fire in the Canmore area, report it immediately by calling 9-1-1. If you are in nearby provincial parks, report wildfires to 310-FIRE,” the Town said.

Residents are also being encouraged to reduce wildfire risks around their properties through FireSmart practices, ensure they have adequate home and property insurance and stay up to date on local hazard ratings.
