660/month Banff Rentals, Firework Ban

Good morning, Bow Valley!
Weâre really looking forward to all the âout of officeâ replies after we hit send on this. Hopefully, youâre nowhere near a screen and fully inhaling that sweet, sweet Bow Valley air. Quick heads-up: if youâre thinking, âCanât wait for the Canada Day fireworks,â both Canmore and Banff have sunset that tradition. No town fireworks, no backyard sparklers. The goal? Reduce wildfire risk and spare pets, wildlife, and anyone whoâs not a fan of surprise explosions.
â Fortune Whelan & Ben S.
âI spent $1200 in the local paper, and got zero calls.â
We hear this all the time.

ROGERS PASS SKIERS: NEW PERMITS, NEW RULES NEXT WINTER

Whatâs Happening? Glacier National Park is tightening its rules for backcountry skiers and snowboarders. Starting winter 2025/26, everyone heading into Rogers Passâincluding unrestricted zonesâwill need a winter permit and must complete a safety quiz.
New Rules, Who Dis? Historically, only annual permit holders had to take an hour-long online quiz to skip the Discovery Centre and head straight into the mountains. Day-use visitors, on the other hand, could drop in and obtain a single-day permit with minimal fuss. Thatâs changing. Come next season, even day-use visitors will need to complete a quizâmaking a âquick lapâ more of a scheduled lesson.
Why the Shift? The update comes after 738 public submissions pushed for greater safety and consistency. And the risks are realâParks Canada logged 62 visitor safety incidents last winter, 21 requiring rescue (including 6 helicopter extractions). Thirty of those involved avalanches, with 12 people caught. While most users follow the rules, even a single misstepâlike the skier who entered a prohibited zone on Feb 12, triggering a wider closureâputs the entire Winter Permit System at risk.
From âGrey Areaâ to Clear-Cut. Officials hope the new rules will eliminate confusion, improve compliance, and keep avalanche terrain safer for everyone.

90 NEW AFFORDABLE HOMES COMING TO BANFFâ$660/MONTH STUDIOS

Whatâs Happening? Banffâs housing crunch is getting a major relief valve: a 90-unit below-market development is moving forward on Wolf Streetâand local officials are calling it a âgame-changer.â
Homes, Not Parking Lots. The project will replace a surface parking lot with 15 ownership units and 75 rentals, including 32 studios. Eight of those will rent at just 60% of median market rentâas low as $660/monthâthanks to a $6.4M provincial boost.
Led by the Town, Managed by BHC. The Town of Banff is spearheading the projectâs design and construction, but once complete, below-market rentals and price-restricted ownership units will be managed through the Banff Housing Corporation (BHC)âa non-profit with a long history of helping locals secure housing. BHC currently oversees 216 homes for purchase and 133 rentals.
More Than Just Roofs. A $5M Pauw Foundation grant adds 8,000 sq ft of community space: kitchen, food centre, family resource rooms, and public washrooms. Expect 190 secure bike stalls, minimal car parking, and universal design in every unit.
Meanwhile on Cougar StreetâŠWeâre still watching another housing play: Canalta Hotelsâ proposed 19-unit, 39-bedroom staff accommodation complex at 448 Cougar Street. Parks Canada is seeking public input until July 2 on potential environmental impacts.
