Kicking Horse Records Its Snowiest December Ever, Officials Say It’s “Once in a Lifetime”

More than 11 feet of snow fell in a single month, pushing season totals past 540 cm and opening all 3,486 acres.

What’s Happening? Kicking Horse Mountain Resort just logged the snowiest December in its history, with 340 cm (11 feet) falling in one month and 540 cm (over 17 feet) already on the ground this season.

The Headline Stat. December 2025 shattered the previous record set in 2017. A near-constant run of late-season storms turned what is usually a ramp-up month into an all-time high-water mark for snowfall.

Why Skiers Care. All 3,486 acres of terrain are now open, from peak to base. That is rare territory this early in the season and puts Kicking Horse firmly in “everything’s firing” mode before January has even settled in.

From the Mountain. General Manager Richard Oszust called the conditions “once-in-a-lifetime,” crediting mountain operations and safety teams for handling the unusually heavy snow while keeping the resort fully operational.

Snow Quality Check. Resort officials say it is not just deep, but good snow. Consistent coverage, strong early-season stability, and consecutive powder days have defined the start of winter.

Bottom Line. Eleven feet in December is not normal. It is historic. And if early-season momentum means anything, Kicking Horse is setting itself up for a winter other resorts will be watching closely.
