Johnston Canyon closed after suspected drowning near Lower Falls
RCMP investigating as Parks Canada halts access to Banff hiking area

Johnston Canyon has been closed after a suspected drowning near the Lower Falls, with RCMP leading the investigation, Parks Canada says.
RCMP said they were called to the area Friday at about 6:42 p.m. after reports that an American tourist had jumped into the rapids and did not resurface, according to CityNews. Police said the incident is not believed to be related to mental health.
Parks Canada said the Johnston Canyon Trail and day-use area were closed May 2 to support a visitor safety operation. Its visitor safety specialists and law enforcement officers are on site, and no further details are being released out of respect for the individual and their family.
“Parks Canada extends sincere condolences to the individual’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the agency said in a Facebook post on May 2.
The closure applies to the entire Johnston Canyon trail network, including access to the Lower and Upper falls, and will remain in place until further notice. The agency is asking the public to respect all closures and stay clear of the area to allow emergency crews to work.
The Lower Falls is one of the most visited features within Johnston Canyon. The route follows a series of narrow catwalks anchored to the canyon walls, leading to a viewing bridge and tunnel beside the waterfall.
At the site, water plunges into a narrow gorge with steep rock walls and fast-moving current. Parks Canada warns surfaces can be slippery, particularly during spring runoff, when water levels are higher and conditions more hazardous.
Parks Canada said it will provide updates once the area reopens to visitors.
