Impaired Driver Caught Going More Than 170 km/h on Highway 1 Near Canmore

A driver was caught travelling more than 170 km/h on the Trans-Canada Highway near Canmore while impaired, swerving and driving without lights late at night, according to Canmore RCMP.

Police said officers stopped the vehicle at about 11:55 p.m. on Sept. 1 after spotting it travelling at more than 170 km/h on Highway 1, where the posted speed limit is 110 km/h.

According to RCMP, the vehicle was swerving within its lane and did not have its lights on despite travelling on a section of highway without artificial lighting.

Police said the driver was also impaired by alcohol.

The vehicle was seized for 30 days and the driver's licence was suspended. RCMP said the driver was also issued tickets and given a mandatory court date for travelling more than 50 km/h above the posted speed limit.

Police did not identify the driver or provide additional details about where along Highway 1 the traffic stop occurred.

Canmore RCMP used the incident to remind motorists to obey the 110 km/h speed limit, use their vehicle's lights and never drive after drinking.

"The result of speed and impairment could have been much worse and caused a serious collision," RCMP said.
