Highway 1 Reopens After Brief Closure, Multiple Crashes Between Lake Louise and Revelstoke

Fresh powder, heavy weekend traffic, and two separate incidents turned the mountain highway into a bottleneck.

What’s Happening? A tough couple days of travel on Highway 1 (Dec 12-13) from Lake Louise to Revelstoke, as heavy snow, packed ski hills, and multiple vehicle incidents brought closures, long delays, and plenty of white-knuckle driving.

Fresh Snow, Fresh Traffic. Lake Louise saw more than 100 centimetres of snowfall over the past week, and the powder frenzy was real. Skiers poured into the region chasing storm totals, and we saw it firsthand: long lines of cars crawling toward Lake Louise on Saturday morning. Plows were working nonstop, but the sheer volume of traffic plus ongoing snowfall made for challenging conditions.

December 12: Closure, Then Single-Lane Alternating. Late Friday morning, DriveBC reported a full closure of Highway 1 between Revelstoke and Golden after a vehicle incident inside Glacier National Park.

That full closure was brief. By 12:54 PM, DriveBC updated the situation: the highway had reopened to single-lane alternating traffic from Field to the BC/Alberta border, with delays expected in both directions.

December 13: Incident Near Takakkaw Falls. On Saturday at 1 PM, DriveBC reported another vehicle incident, this time near Takakkaw Falls in Field. Drivers were warned to expect delays as crews responded.

Highway Back Open, But Still Risky. As of now, Highway 1 is open again. But DriveBC is warning of slippery sections and even water pooling along parts of the route as temperatures fluctuate.
