What’s Happening? Alberta Wildfire has issued a fire advisory for the Calgary Forest Area, which includes the Bow Valley, as warm temperatures, dry vegetation, and gusty winds push wildfire danger to moderate levels, even in early February.

Why This Matters Right Now? While parts of the region still have snow cover, large areas are already exposed and drying out quickly. Alberta Wildfire says warm weather and wind over the coming days are accelerating snow melt, creating conditions where fires can ignite and spread more easily than many people expect this time of year.

Update Near Ya Ha Tinda. The wildfire near Ya Ha Tinda, near Eagle Mountain, continues to burn. What was initially reported on Monday, Feb. 4 at 125 hectares is now listed as out of control at approximately 275 hectares, underscoring how quickly conditions can change even in winter.

Burning Is Discouraged. Although fire permits are not currently required, officials are strongly discouraging all burning projects. Residents are urged to delay burn piles and to recheck old burn sites for heat, smoke, or flare-ups. Alberta Wildfire recommends waiting for deeper snow cover, burning in small stages, and fully extinguishing fires before leaving them.

What Happens Next. Conditions will continue to be monitored closely. For real-time updates, Alberta Wildfire is directing the public to its online status dashboard and emergency alert systems.
