Drivers Report Flat Tires At Highway 1 Construction Site Near Bow Valley

Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors says it is reviewing a Highway 1 construction site west of Calgary after several motorists reportedly suffered flat tires while travelling west toward the Bow Valley on Sept. 15. 

A recent post shared on social media, warned drivers about a raised section of pavement where the highway transitions onto a bridge near Jumping Pound (map here).

The Facebook user said several vehicles were pulled over with flat tires after travelling through the area.

“You can’t see it until you are on top of it,” they wrote.

The construction work is being completed by Carmacks Enterprises on behalf of Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors.

Bow Valley Insider contacted Carmacks to ask what caused the raised section of pavement and whether crews made any changes or added warnings for drivers following reports of damaged vehicles.

A project manager for the company redirected those questions to the Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors, saying they were required by the company's client to do so.

The province did not provide details about what caused the raised section or whether changes have since been made to the road, but confirmed the situation is under review.

“Transportation and Economic Corridors is reviewing the situation with the contractor,” a department spokesperson told Bow Valley Insider.

The department also reminded motorists to obey signage and drive at the posted speed limit in construction zones.

What To Do If Your Vehicle Was Damaged

Motorists who sustained damage to their vehicles on the provincial highway can submit a claim outlining the details of the incident, according to Alberta Transportation.

For incidents at the Jumping Pound construction area, claims should be sent to the department's Calgary office at [email protected].

The information will then be passed along to the contractor completing the work.

“The contractor will respond, in writing, with their position in respect to the claim,” the spokesperson said.

Information about the province's claim process can be found through Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors' Construction Contract Administration page.

It remains unclear what caused the raised section of pavement or whether the condition has since been repaired.
