Climbing Accident on Kid Goat Prompts Safety Warning

What’s Happening? A serious climbing accident on the Grey Waves route at Kid Goat has prompted an urgent warning to Bow Valley climbers. On Saturday morning (June 14), a massive rock—described as oven- to fridge-sized—broke loose near the second pitch, injuring one climber and narrowly missing his belayer.

A Close Call. The injured climber was left hanging mid-route with a damaged rope, making it impossible to lower him safely. Rescuers had to rig a complex setup to move him to a ledge before a heli-sling evacuation. The fall occurred just after the last bolt on pitch two—on a section that’s been climbed countless times without incident.

Family’s Plea for Caution. A family member of the injured climber reached out to Bow Valley Insider, asking the community to avoid Grey Waves for now. “This could’ve turned out way worse,” they wrote. “We don’t want anyone else to go through what we’re going through.”

Why This Matters? According to the Facebook post by a witness who assisted in the rescue, the rockfall may have compromised nearby bolts or destabilized parts of the wall. There’s also blood on the route, and the visual damage is significant. Both the family and climbers involved agree: Grey Waves is currently unsafe and should be avoided until properly assessed.
