What’s Happening? The Town of Canmore has reopened applications for its Memorial Plaque Program, a way to honor loved ones on local benches or picnic tables. But a seat with a view doesn’t come cheap.

A Bit of History. The program lets residents dedicate a bench or picnic table in memory of a loved one, complete with a small plaque installed by the Town. The existing benches are placed in parks and along trails around Canmore, giving families a lasting spot to reflect and remember.

This Isn’t a New Idea. The original program started in the 1990s but was suspended in 2015 after years of confusion, mostly around ownership. Many families believed they owned the benches and sometimes left flowers or asked for repairs. In reality, the Town owns and maintains all benches and plaques, and personal decorations are not permitted.

The Price of Remembrance. Back in 2020, benches cost $3,050 for 10 years and $5,500 for 20. Today, a 10-year term plaque on a bench costs $3,203, while a 20-year term costs $5,775. Picnic tables are pricier still: $3,833 for 10 years or $7,088 for 20. Each additional plaque (up to two per bench/table) adds $525.

How It Works: Only 15 new spaces are available each year, offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants can pick from a map showing available benches and picnic tables throughout Canmore’s parks and trails. Once approved, the Town installs the plaque on the chosen location.

Worth Knowing. Previous versions of the program were designed for cost recovery, but the Town has not confirmed how the money is used today. It’s unclear whether the fees go solely toward installation and maintenance or if they also support broader trail improvements, infrastructure, or landscaping. What is clear is that the benches add to the charm of Canmore’s public spaces, and the price of remembrance has steadily climbed over time.
