Canmore Man Dies After Bicycle Crash Near Banff East Gates
RCMP says 71-year-old rider lost control of bicycle near park’s east gates

A 71-year-old Canmore man has died after losing control of his bicycle on the Trans-Canada Highway near Banff National Park's east gates.
RCMP said the man was riding on the shoulder of Highway 1 at about 4 p.m. on May 29 when he lost control of his bicycle and struck a concrete barrier. Police said the 71-year-old rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
RCMP said a cyclist riding on the nearby Legacy Trail witnessed the fall. According to Stuart Brideaux, public education officer with Alberta Health Services EMS, emergency crews received a call about the incident at approximately 4:10 p.m.
Paramedics transported the man to Canmore General Hospital in “critical and potentially life-threatening condition” before transferring him to STARS air ambulance for transport to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.
"STARS rendezvoused with ground EMS at the Canmore Hospital and flew the patient to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary," said Blake Roberts, government relations and public affairs manager with STARS.
The man died from his injuries in hospital on May 30.
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Gina Slaney said investigators determined the collision was non-criminal and have completed their investigation.
"There was no vehicle involved," Slaney said.
