Bow Valley Parkway Night Closure Returns
Overnight driving restricted from 8 PM to 8 AM until June 25 to protect wildlife habitat

What’s Happening? The seasonal overnight closure is back on the Bow Valley Parkway. From March 1 to June 25, the 17-kilometre stretch between Johnston Canyon Campground and Fireside Picnic Area is closed to vehicles from 8 PM to 8 AM.
Why the Gates Go Down. This section runs through a small but critical slice of Banff’s montane ecosystem. Think prime real estate for wolves, cougars, and bears. Spring is a sensitive time of year, and the overnight quiet gives wildlife space to move across the landscape, access high-quality habitat, and behave like, well, wildlife.
Parks Canada says protecting wildlife is foundational to both long-term ecological health and the kind of visitor experience people come here for in the first place. Fewer headlights at night equals fewer disturbances during a key period.
What It Means for You. If you’re driving, plan around the 8 PM to 8 AM closure. If you’re biking or walking, this stretch remains a popular corridor during restricted hours. Businesses and accommodations along the parkway remain open and accessible via the Trans-Canada Highway, exiting at Castle Junction.
