Banff to Discuss New Bike Racks Designed by Artists
The proposal would add sculptural steel bike racks to a busy downtown block near Canada House Gallery.

A rendering of the proposed artist-designed bike rack shows how the sculptural steel form would function as both public art and bike parking
What’s Happening? Banff’s Community Art Committee is set to review artist-designed bike racks for downtown, including a sculptural steel rack proposed for installation near Canada House Gallery, at its January 14 meeting.
The Big Idea. This is not your standard inverted-U bike rack. The proposal centres on bike parking that doubles as public art. The racks are designed to be functional for cyclists while also acting as a visible streetscape feature in one of Banff’s busiest cultural areas.
According to town documents, the committee will consider commissioning bike racks through Canada House Gallery, with artist renderings brought forward for direction. Administration has previously identified space for between six and nine bicycle parking stalls in the area, using two or three racks depending on final design and layout. A project cost has not yet been announced.
What They’re Looking At. The designs for two types of racks are made from sculptural steel. One is a large, looping form that can hold multiple bikes and reads clearly as public art. A second, smaller raised rack offers a more compact option while keeping the same artistic style. Both are designed to be mounted directly into the ground and are intended for outdoor, high-visibility locations.
Why It Matters? While bike racks might sound minor, this is the kind of change people actually notice. It blends three ongoing priorities in Banff: encouraging cycling, improving downtown amenities, and expanding public art beyond traditional sculptures or murals. Unlike policy updates or long-term plans, this is a physical addition to the street that residents and visitors would interact with daily.
What’s Next? The Community Art Committee will discuss the proposal on January 14 and provide direction on whether to move forward with commissioning the racks. Any final decisions on installation would follow further administrative and council steps. For now, this meeting is about whether Banff wants its bike parking to double as art.
