Banff Sign to be Relocated to Banff Train Station in October 2025

BANFF, AB – The Banff sign will be relocated from Mt. Norquay Rd to the Banff Train Station—the future location of the Banff Eco Transit Hub—this October 2025. Mayor of Banff Corrie DiManno and Adam and Jan Waterous, the owners of Mt. Norquay Ski & Sightseeing Resort and leaseholders of the Banff Railway Lands, broke ground on the new Train Station sign location on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

“We are thrilled to provide a new home for the Banff sign at the Train Station,” said Jan Waterous, owner of Mt. Norquay Ski & Sightseeing Resort and Managing Director of Liricon Capital. “The sign will contribute to the revitalization of the Railway Lands and provide a welcoming space for visitors. It deeply aligns with our vision to ease traffic congestion in Banff.”

The Banff sign is being relocated to address growing safety concerns as drivers illegally stop on Mt. Norquay Road to photograph the iconic entrance sign. The sign will now sit on a green space west of the Banff Train Station, to the right of the entrance to the free parking lot. The area will be redeveloped into a parkette and new community gathering space, featuring benches, landscaping, and pathways, to create an engaging visitor experience around this popular photo opportunity. The redevelopment, which will cost approximately $1.2 million, will also include enhanced access to and from the free parking lot.

“We’re grateful to the Waterous family for their generous support in relocating the Banff sign to a more pedestrian-friendly area, which saves taxpayers the cost of this highly anticipated transition,” said Mayor Corrie DiManno. “The Train Station is an ideal new home for this popular landmark, offering a vibrant gathering place and a great photo opportunity for visitors. It also reinforces the welcoming spirit of this evolving arrival hub. By placing the sign here, we’re encouraging people to park at Banff’s gateway, rather than drive into the downtown core and contribute to traffic congestion.”

The Waterous family and their company Liricon Capital hold the lease to the Banff Railway Lands, which houses the Train Station and free intercept parking lot they developed in 2019. The Waterous family will pay all costs to move the sign, engaging in a private-public partnership with the Town of Banff. The move supports their vision for the Banff Railway Lands Area Redevelopment Plan, a plan to restore the Railway Lands as a visitor arrival centre and hub for sustainable transportation.
