Banff Legacy Trail Closure: Sept 22–26, 2025

A heads-up for cyclists and runners: a key section of the Banff Legacy Trail will be closed September 22–26, 2025 for emergency repair work. Crews need to complete diesel spill remediation before winter sets in.

What’s Closed. The trail will be shut between Valleyview Day Use Area and the Banff East Gates. That means no through-travel between Banff and Canmore for the week. Parks Canada is warning users not to attempt a detour along the Trans-Canada Highway, it’s unsafe and prohibited. Adding to the squeeze: the Rundle Riverside Trail is also closed for Bow Valley Fireguard work.

What’s Open. You can still ride or walk the Legacy Trail from Banff Avenue out to Valleyview, or from Canmore up to the East Gates, but you’ll need to turn around at the closures.

The Takeaway. It’s a short-term pain for long-term gain: five days of disruption now to ensure the pathway is safe, clean, and ready for winter use.
