Banff Could Lose 30 Days of Deep Cold a Year as Climate Warms

A new Parks Canada climate report projects fewer days below -15 C alongside hotter summers, heavier precipitation events and accelerating changes to Banff’s glaciers and snowpack.

The climate that has long defined Banff National Park could look markedly different within decades, with hotter summers, far fewer bitterly cold days and a frost-free season stretching more than twice as long as it once did.

A new Parks Canada climate report projects the park's average annual temperature could rise by roughly 3 to 4 degrees by the latter half of this century if greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase at their current rate.

The changes would ripple through nearly every part of the national park, from its glaciers and alpine meadows to its rivers, forests and even the way visitors experience the landscape.

Under a high-emissions scenario, Banff is projected to experience an average of 16 days a year above 25 C between 2051 and 2080, compared with just one historically. The average hottest day of the year would climb from 23 C to 28.8 C.

At the other end of the thermometer, the number of days below -15 C is projected to fall from 67 a year to 37.

Perhaps one of the most striking changes is the length of time between the last spring frost and first fall frost.

That frost-free season averaged 46 days during the report's historical reference period of 1961 to 1990. By 2051 to 2080, it is projected to average 98 days under a moderate-emissions scenario and 115 days under a high-emissions scenario.

The projections come from an ensemble of 26 global climate models, which Parks Canada used to compare historical conditions with those expected between 2051 and 2080.

Parks Canada says the report is intended to help the agency prepare for those changes rather than simply document them.

“The 2026 Banff National Park Climate Change Summary Report provides recent and projected future climate conditions in the park,” Tomi Postma, acting public relations and communications officer for Banff National Park, said in a statement to Bow Valley Insider.

“This information helps Parks Canada staff, the public, and stakeholders understand potential implications for Banff National Park and identify opportunities for proactive adaptation.”

More Rain Overall, But Potentially Drier Summers

A warmer Banff does not necessarily mean a drier one.

Annual precipitation is projected to increase from a historical average of 1,185 millimetres to 1,284 millimetres under the high-emissions scenario. The number of days receiving more than 10 millimetres of precipitation is projected to increase from 31 to 37 annually.

But those annual figures mask an important seasonal shift.

Climate models suggest summer precipitation could decrease even as total precipitation increases, while extreme precipitation events become heavier. The maximum precipitation falling over a five-day period is projected to increase about 14 percent under the high-emissions scenario.

Rising temperatures are also expected to cause more precipitation to fall as rain rather than snow and change the timing and magnitude of spring stream flows.

The implications extend well beyond weather.

Parks Canada expects warmer temperatures to accelerate glacier melt, thaw alpine permafrost and shorten the duration of winter snowpack. Heat waves, droughts and wildfires could also become more frequent or severe.

Alpine Meadows Among Areas at Risk

One particularly vulnerable landscape is the alpine.

About 44 percent of Banff National Park falls within the alpine ecoregion, but alpine meadows account for only about 6 percent of the park.

Parks Canada says changes to temperature, snowfall, snowpack and the timing of snowmelt could profoundly alter those ecosystems.

Trees and shrubs are expected to move farther into alpine areas as temperatures rise, while the distribution of plants and animals could shift. Together, those changes are expected to reduce the amount of alpine meadow habitat in the park.

Parks Canada is already using research, ecological monitoring and modelling to better understand those changes. Visitor restrictions and seasonal closures in sensitive areas, including Sunshine Meadows, Healy Pass and Citadel Pass, are also among the tools being used to reduce additional pressure on alpine ecosystems.

Preparing for a Different Banff

Parks Canada said climate adaptation is already being incorporated into how the park is managed.

Current efforts include prescribed fires, construction of fire breaks and emergency planning to reduce wildfire risk.

The agency is also restoring species including bison, westslope cutthroat trout and bull trout, while using habitat protection, monitoring and seasonal restrictions to protect sensitive species and ecosystems, Postma said.

Other changes are happening within Parks Canada's own operations. The agency said it is replacing light-duty fleet vehicles with zero-emission or hybrid vehicles, installing electric vehicle chargers and has replaced diesel generators at Ya Ha Tinda Ranch with a solar microgrid.

Climate considerations are also being incorporated into future building projects and emergency preparedness.

The report provides a glimpse of what some of that adaptation could eventually look like.

As glaciers retreat, for example, Parks Canada identifies protecting and restoring cold-water habitat for westslope cutthroat and bull trout as one potential response. More extreme weather could require stronger flood and wildfire warning systems, while warmer winters could increase the frequency and severity of insect outbreaks such as mountain pine beetle.

Wildfire is already a significant part of that work. Since 2002, Parks Canada's fire management team has treated more than 22,900 hectares through 73 projects in Banff National Park, with another roughly 1,760 hectares in planning. Parks Canada says longer fire seasons and increasingly dry conditions are expected as the climate warms.

But Parks Canada stopped short of identifying any one threat, such as wildfire, glacier retreat or changing snowpack, as its highest climate priority.

“Climate change impacts to Parks Canada-administered places are complex,” Postma said.

Instead, the agency said its approach is to build resilience across the landscape, including protecting biodiversity, connecting habitats, restoring ecosystems and preparing infrastructure and operations for changing conditions.

“The Climate Change Summary Report is only one of several key references that will help inform integration of climate change thinking and action into existing management approaches and operations,” Postma said.

Those changes are already contemplated in Banff's 2022 management plan, which introduced addressing climate change as one of the park's nine overarching strategies and called for climate considerations to be incorporated across park management.
