Banff's Caribou Street Opens to Foot Traffic and Alley Vehicles

Reopening supports downtown businesses as holiday traffic picks up

A look at the newly reopened Caribou Street alley

What’s Happening? Caribou Street reached a major checkpoint in its reconstruction this week. After weeks of excavation, detours, and a whole lot of orange tarps, the freshly paved surface is now open to pedestrians again, and the alley at Caribou Street has reopened to vehicle traffic.

A Big Step Forward. Crews completed asphalt paving on November 10, which allowed the Town to remove barriers and restore foot access along the full stretch between Banff Avenue and Lynx. Businesses now have clearer access heading into the holiday season, and the Town Hall and Bear Street parking lots are fully open to all vehicles.

Why It Matters. The paving milestone is an important step, but construction is not finished for the season. Crews will continue working through next week on concrete structures, traffic signals, streetlights, and planter pads. A full winter pause is expected, with major utility work scheduled to resume in spring.

The Road Ahead. When construction restarts in 2026, the work will swap out nearly 100-year-old water, sewer, and storm lines that are at the end of their lifespan.
