After Nine Months Of Construction, Banff's Caribou Street Nears Reopening

The end is finally in sight for one of downtown Banff's largest infrastructure projects.

After nine months of construction, the reconstruction of Caribou Street is entering its final phase, with paving stone installation expected to be completed by June 24 and the last major road closures scheduled to end in early July.

The project, which began in September 2025, has transformed one of Banff's busiest commercial streets from a construction zone into a nearly finished pedestrian-oriented corridor. While crews still have landscaping and finishing work ahead, the heavy excavation that dominated the street for months is largely complete.

According to the Town of Banff's latest construction update, all sidewalks on the east portion of Caribou Street reopened June 20, while installation of the street's paving stones is expected to be completed by June 24, weather permitting.

While the most disruptive phases of construction are now behind the project, some work remains.

"There is still landscaping work to be done, and installation of street furnishings like bike racks, waste stations, wayfinding signs, benches, etc.," the Town said. "This work will be non-disruptive to businesses in the area, but the street will not be open to vehicles until this is completed."

The alleyway between Wolf Street and Buffalo Street is expected to reopen to vehicles on June 29, along with the parking lots at Town Hall and on Bear Street.

The Lynx Street intersection, one of the project's final major construction areas, is scheduled to reopen to pedestrians and vehicles on Canada Day before temporarily closing again from July 2 to July 4 to complete landscaping work. The temporary reopening is intended to help accommodate increased traffic and pedestrian volumes during Canada Day celebrations.

"The intersection at Lynx and Caribou Street is expected to be open fully on Monday, July 6," the Town said.

For locals walking through the area, the finished product is beginning to take shape.

The reconstruction extends the shared-street design already established on Bear Street, creating a curbless streetscape intended to improve the pedestrian experience while maintaining access for vehicles. New planters, trees, seating areas and upgraded public amenities are being added as part of the redesign.

Much of the project's importance, however, lies beneath the surface.

The reconstruction involved replacing aging water, sewer and storm drainage infrastructure serving the downtown core. Town officials previously said some of the underground systems were approaching 100 years old and had reached the end of their service life. The project included replacing the main lines and service connections to adjacent properties, work the Town said was necessary because ongoing repairs would no longer be sufficient to maintain these essential services.

The project also included a realignment of the Lynx Street intersection to improve safety for both pedestrians and vehicles.

The reconstruction carries a total budget of approximately $6.8 million over two years, including funding from the Town's general capital reserve as well as water and sewer capital reserves.

If construction remains on schedule, residents and visitors will see the street fully reopened just as Banff enters the busiest stretch of its summer tourism season.
