From Nordegg With Love is one of the more challenging via ferrata lines in the Abraham Lake area - and that's exactly the appeal. Expect sustained climbing with sections that go overhanging: the kind of terrain where your forearms will have opinions. You're clipped in and secure the whole way, so the challenge is the movement itself, not your safety - which is what makes it such a satisfying day out.

How it runs

Morning: 10:00 AM

Meet, gear up, walk in

• Meet at Abraham Lake at 10 AM for gear check and introductions

• Short approach - a 30-minute hike to the base of the route

• Safety briefing: harness use, clipping systems, movement technique

Midday: On the route

Onto the wall

• Begin the ascent, moving at a pace that works for the group

• Hands-on coaching: footwork, body position, moving efficiently

• Breaks at scenic viewpoints to catch your breath and the scenery

Afternoon: Wrap-up

Top out and down

• Finish the route

• Descend via the walking trail back to Abraham lake by 4 PM

It's best suited to folks who've done a via ferrata before or have some climbing miles under their belt, plus a solid level of fitness. And here's the perfect setup: run The Fox the day before, get comfortable on the systems and the exposure, then come back for The Fox with the fundamentals already dialled. Do it that way and you've got one of the most rewarding weekends going, right in your own backyard.
